Why does the government require car insurance but not health insurance?
Why is it that they care more about making sure the other person's property gets fixed and not about the health of the people involved?

This is a random thought driving home today from work.

What do you think. Should health insurance be required instead of car insurance?

Your insurance with cover repairs for YOUR car if someone wrecks into you but they do not have insurance. The purpose of the law is that everyone had car insurance, if someone hit your car, their insurance would have to pay and your insurance would not raise your principle. I am sure that if you read your insurance policy closely, it will say it only covers damage to other cars... unless you have a compehecive (sp?) policy in which case it will cover both cars.

Massachusetts is considering or has already passed a law requiring everyone to have health insurance.

The government has the jurisdiction over the roads and putting into law what conditions have to be met in order to use them. They don't have that jurisdiction over one's health.

Also, even if the law didn't require insurance, the bank financing your loan would until it's paid off.

One is not legally required to own a car, the insurance premium one pays is only required of them because they have a car.

If one gets sick, they don't have to see the doctor, if they're insured or not. Car insurance is to protect other people who may incur damages from your driving. If someone doesn't want to insure themselves medically, that's their business.

Its much simpler than the other answers. The state can deny you the privilege of driving you car on the road if you do not have auto insurance. They do not have the power to deny you the right to live if you do not have health insurance. If they could figure out a way they would make you have health insurance.

Where they require health insurance, what are they going to do if you can not afford an insurance policy. Someone with a severe preexisting condition could have a good job and still not afford a policy.

The required automobile insurance you are referring to is called "Automobile Liability Insurance". This is insurance that provides property and medical coverage to someone else if you are involved in an accident and it is determined you are at fault.

(Collision Automobile Insurance, which is extra coverage on the same policy, covers property damage to your car and is covered if you are at fault or even slid into something - anything that is not the fault of the other party - if the other party was at fault, your property would be covered by THEIR liability insurance)

Collision insurance is only required if you have an outstanding loan on your car through a financial institution (this is called a lien). This is because whoever (the morgagor) loaned you (the mortgagee) money for the car needs to make sure that the insurance will pay for damages (so they will be paid) in the event you negligently wreck your car.

Heath insurance is optional because the only person that is covered is you (not the PUBLIC at LARGE). Further, your own policy most likely also has personal protection that includes medical expenses for you to in the event of an accident - depends on the policy.

Health insurance is for accidental injury, illness, doctor's visits - usually not directly associated with a car accident - and this, again, depends on the insurance policy, circumstances, etc.

I know this is a lot, but thought I'd give you a good understanding of it.

Car insurance is required to protect OTHER people's property--not your own.

Unless we're worried about untreated pneumonia being passed around by poor folks, that's not going to be an issue.

*********************************

Goes to show you what good it does to "require" people to have insurance. BTW, I think you either need better car insurance or a lucky rabbit's foot.

Car insurance that is required covers the party's injuries, not usually the property.

You are required to have insurance to cover the damage you do to others with your car, but if you don't insure your own health why should anyone else care?

Good Luck

Car insurance isn't for YOU, it's for the other party. Health insurance is totally up to you, just like your optional car insurance (collision and comprehensive)

You don't need auto insurance if you operate your car, truck, suv, etc... on your own property. You are required to have it when you go into the public. The purpose is to protect the public from damage you cause.

i guess cause other people care more about you damaging their car and you not paying for it than themselves getting injured and not be able to afford it. Whats more likely to happen? myself getting injured or some jackbutt hitting my car?

not having car insurance affects others not having health insurance affects yourself. no i dont think health insurance should be required.

MA just started a law requiring health insurance, or get fined on your taxes.

Because if I don't take care of my body and die, you lose nothing - but if I don't insure my car when I crash into you - you lose!

It's about liablility... not protecting ourself.

Is classic car insurance better for a 1984 corvette or regular car insurance?
im planning on getting a 1984 corvette but the insurance for it is a little too high.i just found out about classic car insurance but i really don't know much about it.but for classic car insurance,am i limited to a certain number of things like how far i can drive my car, when i can drive, etc?will the insurance actually be less or more for classic car insurance?and what is the best classic car insurance company i should go with?

I would go with the Classic Car Insurance because other wise you might not get as much as you want for your car if it is ever totaled or stolen. I know some classic car insurance is stated amount & regular insurance is ACV (Actual Cash Value)

I think classic car insurance is more limited then regular car insurance. But I'm pretty sure that it is a lot cheaper too, so you should definitely contact some insurance places and see if their plans would suite you. Hagerty seems to be one of the most popular collector car insurance companies. I just went to the Hagerty website and it gave me a quote of $236/year for a 1984 Corvette. But I said that I live in MN and am 46 years old, so it might be different for you. I'd check them out for sure because it says you can go on 'occasional' leisure drives too.

As the Corvette of 1984 is not a real classic or collectible special insurance isn't necessary.

I was thanking the same thing

Waht to ask car insurance company when discussing repairs to my car after accident.?
I was involved i car accident with the other driver taking the blame. My car is damaged and the other drivers insurance company will be contacting me regarding my car. What should I ask them? I am planning to ask about a hire car, who will repair my car or declare it a write off, can I claim for travel expenses whilst without my car and also is it okay to continu driving my damaged car before it is assessed by them. Is there anything else I should ask?

Year, make , model, extent and area of damage? The other party's insurance should pay for a rental...best not to drive the car if the damage causes it to be unsafe or can cause further damage. Total loss is usually when repairs would exceed 70-80 percent of actual value of the car.

Discuss what repairs need to be done, any parts other than OEM that will be used, any betterment involved on wearable items, guarantee on repairs, qualities and expertise of the repair shop, diminished value if your state allows that, any possible long term or post-repair problems that may crop up and need to be supplemented.

If answers are not acceptable, you may want to go through your own insurance and let them go after the other party.

How does a car insurance company know how often I use my car?
I know that the less I use my car, the less the car company will cost me. But how can they know how often I use my car?

If I buy car insurance claiming that I always use public transportation to work, will they believe it?

They will believe you until you get into a serious accident (not just a fender bender) That's when they check everything. And if they think you've been fibbing, they may not pay for anything.

They'll believe it until you report a crash in the middle of weekday rush hour; then they may check it out to see if you were truthful. They may also ask you for specific mileage at renewal time.

There is nothing for them to believe.. do you want to be driving into work? Because if you tell them you'll be getting the bus you won't be insured to drive to work.

Or am I missing something.

You are better of comparing different insurance companies to get the best rate. You can check out

http://compare-car-insurance-rates.mobi if you want

They may check the milage on your car and depending what season it is.

Am I required to get rental car insurance if I don't have my own auto insurance?
I am planning to sell my car and cancel my auto insurance. If I want to rent a car, am I required to buy their rental car insurance, since I wouldn't have any other auto insurance otherwise?

Yes Yes and Yes! It's very important to have rental insurance. Let's say you park the car on the street, and come back and its side swipped. They are going to come after you for it But if you have insurance, it should cover it.

you don't need to have auto insurance to rent a car. but you will most likely have to purchase there insurance. even if they dont require you to purchase it i would suggest doing so cuz you never know what might happen. its pretty cheap to no more than a few bucks a day for the minimum.

Yes, they will not let you drive the car without insurance.

I might be wrong but I think you have to have auto insurance to rent a car. I remember haveing to give my auto insurance card to the agent when I rented a car.

Rental cars come with basic insurance. If you want to be covered for any damage which might be your fault, take the additional coverage. No, it's not required, but if you run into a tree you would pay out of pocket to get it fixed.

Yeah, you are require to get it just in case you get in a car accident, but go talk to your insurance, even though you sell your car, you should keep the insurance and use that towards the rental car, it's cheaper than renter insurance.

depends on where you are located, most likey yes. It actually shouldn't cost much though.

no i don't think so, i've rented 2 times before i have auto insurance, but it doesn't cover their car...give me a break they sell seperate insurance to cover their car. but my insurance covers the daily fee for the car. not to insure it.

I'm not sure if it is required, but I would recommend it. Other wise you are responsible for any damage to the rental vehicle.

you have to carry some type of insurance on the rental car. If you don't have your own policy that the car can go under, you will have to purchase the rental insurance through the rental agency.

just to be safe, i would, but make sure you know what you're getting, also, take pics of the rental car, all over , and with the agent in the pics. Guarantee this is Very important. Save your paperwork for 1 year later. Just in case!

Can i start insurance on a new car with a new insurance provider before the current policy runs out ?
My current car insurance policy runs out at the end of the month and I will not be renewing with them. I am getting a new car approx 2 weeks before the expiry date. Can i start the insurance with another company and 'overlap' the insurance ?

You CAN do that since you are changing anyway.

You might want to notify your PRIOR insurance company once you have the NEW coverage in force - just to avoid any duplication of coverage and any "earned premium." If the company automatically renews and you don't inform them, they might try to collect for the time you had coverage in force.

Just show them a copy of your NEW policy and they will cancel the old.

That's the way it SHOULD be done.

Good luck, drive RESPONSIBLY and I hope this helps!

Perhaps You may google it first ,however, if you like some direct resource ,here http://www.InsuranceFreeTip.info/insurance-for-free.htm might be your choosing.

You certainly could . I've done it twice and my insurance company was ok with it.

autoinsurance.noneto.com - try this one. I have their car insurance and, as I know, they can provide such a service.

How do you get proof of car insurance without a car?
I had my brother listed as a driver on my insurance policy and he is moving so will no longer be using my car. The insurance company is requiring that I show proof of insurance before removing him from the policy. They are telling me there is no other way to remove him from the policy due to a DUI charge. Is it even possible to get car insurance without a car? What should I do?

If you have an insurance company that is refusing to allow you to remove an authorized driver from your policy unless you PROVE the authorized driver has insurance elsewhere, it's time to get a new policy in place at another company and then drop your current insurance. That is ridiculous.

If you want to stay with that company for some reason (although I couldn't think of any) you might call your agent and ask why you need to do that, and tell him you will switch if you can't, and see what happens.

call your insurance agent and them them to send you a ins card or proof that you are insured

that's strange, they shouldn't require you to prove he has other insurance, it must be a company policy. normally, you should be able to sign a driver exclusion to remove him as a driver on the policy. ask to speak with your agent directly and try to explain the situation to him, maybe he can find a loophole for you.

they may be misinterpreting you. If he still lived in the same household but you wanted him removed then you would need to prove that he is insured elsewhere. You should ask them if you can sign an endorsement saying he will NOT drive the vehicle and if he does you are legally liable for any claim and if that would be enough to have him removed. I don't understand the need for him to show insurance if he no longer lives with you.

shop around and see what you can do. Getting a driver with a DUI off your policy should do wonders for your premiums as long as your record is good

You can buy a personal policy. In TX an SR-22 will work.

How does car insurance work when driving other peoples cars?
I have a 200bhp car and my car insurance provider (quinn direct) allows me to drive other peoples cars 3rd party as long as the cars not in my name.

Does that mean I could drive a 400bhp car then and be insured or is it limited to cars under my insurance group?

Yes you can drive any car and it don't matter what engine is in the car. 3rd party means if you smash up the other car you won't get it fixed by the insurance company so you will have to put your hand in your pocket.

The normal situation is that it is cars that are considered similar in engine capacity, value and group or lower. However, the only way to be certain about cover is to ring your insurer and ask them. In most cases if it doesn't you can have it added for a few hours or longer for a nominal charge.

Yes, you can drive another car but only at 3rd party. (The insurance will NOT pay for any damage to the car you're driving). It would be prudent to telephone the respective insurance companies in the first place to qualify your position/insurance.

For automobile insurance the obvious way to get a low rate is do a rate comparison on auto policies. Make sure that you choose similar policies with the same limits, auto make, location, etc so that all things are an accurate comparison.

What I usually recommend is an online comparison quote at http://www.lowratetoday.com since they have top name insurers and can give multiple prices on auto insurance polices.

Either you or they or both of you will be insured to drive a vehicle you do not own. Check the policy terms and small print for categories and exemptions.

Its for any but only for 3rd party cover - that is if you have an accident driving someone elses car that is your fault (the car has to be insured by the owner) then the car that you hit will be covered on your insurance but not the one you are driving

i have a 315bhp car, and I don't let other people drive it. you can drive other peoples cars, as long as the car itself is insured it doesnt matter the horse power.

well i work for an insurance company and insurance follows the car.

What that means is if you drive a car make sure the car has insurance and you will be ok. check out the limits and you should be okay.

You can drive any car unless you both are insured.

How long do car insurance companies take to pay out for a stolen written off car?
I had my car nicked about two weeks ago, I have sent the insurance company all the required docs and incident form. They found the car burnt out a day later. Police were informated as soon as I realised car was gone. How long will the insurance companiy take to pay out?

They will have to complete their investigation before they consider paying out. How long the investigation takes depends on what has to be done. Since we don't know the details of your claim and have not spoken to your adjuster -- we can't tell you. However, since the car was found burned out - they will take a very close look at this claim.

Easy theft claims are usually paid within a month. A burned out car maybe more complicated. Maybe. If it seems fishy, then they can send the claim to a special investigative unit to investigate. Then it can take a lot longer. If you have nothing to hide, then just cooperate, and everything will check out, and then they will pay you with no problem.

I know people that had nothing to hide but refused to cooperate so never got paid. It is in your policy that you have to cooperate with the insurance company. So, do whatever they ask.

The insurance company should be providing you with a rental car until they settle your claim. If you don't have one, then call and ask the claim rep for one.

Good Luck.

Simple answer is, As long as they want!

You can reduce this time by keeping on at them in writing, e-mail and phone.

Be polite but firm, keep asking when they will pay out, and if they have any steps to complete first then ask when they expect that step to be completed.

They will pay up as soon as possible because they want rid of the pressure from you.

I would prepare for a long wait. 3-4 weeks to start. Fire and Theft claims do need to be investigated (as the previous answers have said). It is a good thing you sent in all your paperwork already. That will help.

Lastly, I would call your theft and fire adjuster often after the 2 week. Your file will find its way to the top of the pile!!!

usually within 6 weeks.

1 week but get on top of them.

i've been waiting for 3 months for car## nas# to sort out my bike claim hope yours goes better than mine

Where do car insurance companies get your driving record in CA?
I hit a guys bumper while driving a company car a couple of years ago and I thought he filed a claim but the company took care of it and I never heard about it again. I'm getting car insurance and I pulled my driving record from the DMV and all I have is a seatbelt violation but no accidents. Is there another database somewhere that insurance companies will check or is it just your DMV record? Maybe this all got settled without insurance intervention and I dont' want to pay higher fees if its not necessary. Am I in the clear?

Was a citation issued at the time of the accident? If not, it won't show up in the MVD. The insurance industry also has something similar to a credit report, called the CLUE report that lists past property and casualty claims made by you. That is used as well in determining your insurability.

dmv

they just use the dmv

It's the DMV they will check. If you were not cited a couple of years ago, then it would not be on your DMV record. You should be fine as long as you were not cited.

Insurance companies get wreck info from CLUE (Comprehensive Loss Underwriting Exchange) - more companies run CLUE Reports than MVRs! They are more informative!

Good luck and I hope this helps!

The only way a ticket or accident is reported on your driving record (obtained from the DMV) is if you were found guilty and convicted of the violation. Then that goes on your driving record.

If a claim is made with the insurance company, and they have your information, a submission will be made ot the National Insurance Claims Database.

Basically what that is, is the insurance company enters your info, your vehicle info, date/time of accident, etc.

When you apply for new insurance, your agent can search thru the database and see if you had any prior claims.

If you did and it wasnt submitted ot the database, and you don't tell the agent, and its not on your driving record, well then i guess no one will ever have to know!
